The City of Crystal Lake is currently recruiting for an exciting employment opportunity for a new position, Deputy Director of Public Works and Engineering.


With a population of 40,743, Crystal Lake is the largest community in McHenry County and is a city with a rich history, rewarding quality of life and tremendous community spirit. Located 50 miles northwest of Chicago and home to two Metra stations, Crystal Lake residents enjoy the many employment, cultural, and recreational opportunities of a major metropolitan city, yet live in a pleasant, small-town atmosphere.  The City is a politically and financially stable home-rule community that is seeking a forward-thinking Deputy Director of Public Works and Engineering to play a strategic role with the leadership and direction of the Public Works Department.


The Public Works Department, with an annual operating budget of $13 million and 62 personnel, is APWA Accredited, joining an elite few Public Works Departments in Illinois. The Department’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) includes a wide variety of complex engineering and construction projects including the restoration of Crystal Creek, two new deep potable water wells with transmission mains, phosphorous reduction improvements at both wastewater treatment plants, and a new deep jack-and-bore storm sewer project to control water levels at the City’s Three Oaks Recreational Area. The CIP also includes projects such as intersection improvements, wastewater lift stations, water well rehabilitations and pedestrian/bicycle projects. Characteristics of the City’s Public Works operations include a high level of customer service, sustainability, long-range planning, collaboration and strategic leadership.  This position reports to the Director of Public Works.


This is an excellent opportunity for a talented professional to make a difference in a high-performing organization that employs the use of best practices.  The fiscal year 2022-2023 salary range for this position is $108,360 – $165,747.  Salary is commensurate with knowledge, skills, and experience.  This position will remain open until filled.  Applications will be considered as they are received.
