City of Elmhurst, IT Technician I

This position, under the general supervision of the IT Supervisor, is responsible for maintaining the proper functioning of the City’s technology resources, including LAN hardware and software, microcomputers and peripherals, telephony hardware and software, and audio/visual equipment, including direct user support, installation and upgrades, routine purchases, research, and keeping an accurate inventory. Other essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Take personal responsibility to provide exceptional customer service in order to promote and maintain a positive City image, constructive working environment, and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community.
  • Provide support for microcomputer software and hardware questions and problems. Work with IT Supervisor to enlist outside support or services as needed.
  • Provide first line support by monitoring and processing requests for service from the Help Desk and from other sources. Properly categorize, prioritize, track time and communicate status with customers.
  • Maintain inventory of PC related equipment and software and ensure compliance with software licensing requirements.
  • Provide day-to-day administration of wide and local area networks, including maintenance of security, monitoring of system logs and automated processes, such as scheduled backups.
  • Research, evaluate, purchase, and install new microcomputer hardware and software to fulfill user requirements and in accordance with standards established by the Information Technology department.
  • Maintain support documentation including problem logs, troubleshooting quick references, installation procedures, etc.
  • Conduct small group and one-on-one training as necessary to provide users with the ability to utilize application effectively.
  • Provide secondary system level support for the City’s critical systems, including the City’s Enterprise Resource Planning System.
  • Assist IT staff on various projects including inventory, system migrations, and software implementation and installation of new hardware.
  • Prepare defective equipment for repair or warranty replacement.
  • Prepare old equipment for municipal auction.
  • Provide setup and deployment of citywide audio/visual presentation systems.
  • Maintain safe work areas and equipment, promptly reports work hazards, as necessary. Reports all work related injuries immediately, complies with all safety rules and attends appropriate safety programs.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum two years of college in Computer Information Science or related technical degree program required. A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or BIS and possession of A+ certificate is preferred.

Knowledge of installation and repair of current PC hardware and software including current Microsoft applications, Win10, and Internet Explorer/Firefox/Chrome is required. Additionally, candidates must have working knowledge of HTML, Content Management Systems (CMS), and TCP/IP related protocols. Experience in Tyler Munis and Microsoft Outlook is preferred. Candidate must also possess a valid driver’s license.
