The City of North Chicago is seeking a Building & Facilities Manager to work in the Building and Economic & Community Development Department. The City of North Chicago, Illinois, (population 30,038), a home-rule municipality, is located approximately 36 miles north of the Chicago “Loop.” Located on the shores of Lake Michigan between Chicago and Milwaukee, North Chicago is the proud home to Naval Station Great Lakes, the only training command for United States Navy recruits and the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center – the nation’s first fully integrated Veteran’s Affairs and Department of Defense entity.
NATURE OF WORK
Under the direction of the Economic & Community Development Director, this position is responsible for maintaining buildings for the City. This position makes sure the buildings are maintained, which entails coordinating the daily and weekly cleaning schedules of the custodial staff, as well as determining and scheduling repairs, and renovation projects. The Facilities Manager performs and supervises tasks related to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, security, environmental, safety, custodial coordination.
This position requires excellent communication skills, attention to details, and project coordination. The Facilities Manager schedules preventative maintenance and responds to urgent maintenance calls. This position negotiates with outside vendors for repairs, supplies and other measures. The Facilities Manager is responsible for supervising the custodial and maintenance staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs some minor repair or building maintenance within City Hall; coordinates major trouble repairs with outside vendors; performs other related duties and assignments as needed or
- Reviews basic requirements of municipal building, such as, water, electricity, air conditioning,
- Hires and supervises custodial and maintenance staff for the building and assign duties
- Keeps municipal building safe by ensuring it meets building code
- Oversees functioning of building systems including mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire and
- Manages the maintenance and custodial needs of City buildings and
- Maintains equipment on City property by monitoring equipment, maintaining records of maintenance repairs, and performs repairs as
- Oversees contractors for facility renovation projects, entailing HVAC, and electrical systems.
- Works with Economic & Community Development Director to report problems and provide monthly status updates on any pending
- Supervises contractors and vendors as it relates to maintenance
- Responsible for creating, updating, and maintaining capital improvement budget for annual and long-range fiscal maintenance
- Coordinates and oversees building space allocation, layout and facility expansion in concert with architect/designer when
- Develops and manages preventative maintenance program for facilities
- Develops and maintains a relationship with all contractors and vendors ensuring efficient facility
- Serves as primary contract for facility related emergencies which may require evening and weekend
- Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
- This position requires a High School Diploma, or associate’s degree or equivalent, with training in maintenance of buildings.
- A minimum of three years’ experience in facilities management and supervising others.

Salary range: Salary $73,136 – $97,394 Annually +/- DOQ. The City also has a very attractive benefit package to include:
