Ela Township, Highway Superintendent

The Township encompasses 36 square miles in southwest Lake County and serves over 44,000 residents. The Ela Township Highway Department serves both unincorporated and incorporated communities (through intergovernmental agreements) with public works related services within township borders. 


The Highway Superintendent is responsible for a $3 million operating budget, infrastructure systems, and all matters relative to the operation of the Highway Department, including personnel matters, administration and maintenance of Township highway department facilities and services, including snow and ice control operations, building maintenance, engineering, refuse, street maintenance, park and cemetery maintenance, vehicle maintenance, stormwater sewers, along with stringent payroll and expenditure controls of the department. The Highway Superintendent will be part of the senior leadership team of the Township.  This is a salaried full-time exempt position that reports directly to the Township Manager.   Normal business hours are Monday – Thursday, 6:30am – 3:30pm and Friday, 6:30am – 12:30pm. 

Minimum Qualifications 

A bachelor’s degree in a related major (i.e. Engineering, Construction Management, Public or Business Administration), and/or a minimum 7 years’ experience in a similar field of work with 3-5 years of supervisory/management experience with a comparable private or public entity is required, including budgeting ability and daily oversight of workforce capabilities. Substantial prior experience in a highway or public works department is strongly preferred. 

Experience with intergovernmental agreements, grants, government purchasing/bid requirements, and capital project management is essential. Must have a high level of independent judgement and problem solving. Candidate should have strong capability to manage labor costs, improve scheduling of workforce and increase productivity of workforce. Requires a CDL – Class B license within 6 months of hire. 


This position offers a salary with an expected hiring range of $70,000 – $85,000 depending on qualifications and experience.  Additionally, the Township offers an excellent benefit package that includes paid vacation, sick leave, holiday pay, health coverage, and a pension plan through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
