NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled work in the operation of a variety of motorized maintenance, repair, and construction equipment and responsibility to assist with a significant special assignment such as the Village’s forestry or storm sewer maintenance program.

 

Work involves, as the primary responsibility for a majority of the work time, the safe and efficient operation of one or more types of specialized equipment that entail considerable manipulative skill in operation. Work may also involve responsibility for researching, planning, and implementing a significant special assignment. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed during progress and upon completion. Promotion into this position is evaluated by the Director of Public Works by evaluating the specialized and general skills the employee possesses and the availability of this position.

 

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Operates a backhoe as primary responsibility and with a high level of skill and safe practices.

Operates dump trucks, riding mowers, brush chipper, chain saws, and related equipment in accomplishment of maintenance, repair, and construction work on streets, properties, and storm sewer lines; plows and salts roads.

Operates equipment safely, efficiently, and effectively and enforces safety regulations and work standards in performance of assignments. Performs minor maintenance and service of assigned equipment.

Performs a variety of labor and maintenance tasks and operates small equipment and hand tools related to the work of the crew to which assigned.

Assists in repairing water main breaks, removing and replacing hydrants, repairing meter leaks, and flushing hydrants.

Works with contractors and residents regarding tree trimming and removal.

Locates Village utilities in accordance with Village and J.U.L.I.E. requirements on a regular basis.

Installs and maintains ditches, culverts, and manholes, inlets and catch basins; excavates for same.

 

Follows all applicable safety policies and procedures, including reporting all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisors. Reports all accidents and near misses to supervisor and participates in accident investigations where appropriate.

 

Maintains and uses appropriate personal protective equipment.

Recommends improvement to safety practices; takes personal responsibility for preventable accidents.

Inspects work area, including vehicles, equipment and facilities for potential hazards and conducts appropriate housekeeping to keep work areas free of hazards.

Follows proper lifting/material handling procedures at all times; wears and maintains appropriate footwear for job duties.

Completes all required annual safety training.

Provides effective and efficient customer services; promotes and maintains responsive community relations.

May be called out on a 24 hour basis.

 

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

Graduation from high school (or GED); considerable experience working with construction, maintenance, and repair equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations applicable to equipment operation.

Knowledge of the safety hazards and precautions associated with the operation of motorized and heavy equipment.

Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to perform difficult physical tasks for extended periods of time in all types of weather.

Ability to perform work in a safe manner, follow safe work procedures, and take necessary safety precautions.

Skill in the safe and effective operation, care, and maintenance of assigned equipment.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid Illinois Commercial driver’s license in the appropriate classification.

Possession of a valid Class D or higher Water Operator License.

 

SALARY

$32.48 to $43.31 per hour with additional stipends
