The Village of Niles is seeking a candidate for the full-time position of Civil Engineer II in the Public Works Department. This is an advanced civil engineering position of supervisory and professional nature. This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the work of technical staff engaged in public works construction and design activities. Work requires the use of considerable judgment, initiative, professional knowledge, the ability to be a self-starter, problem solver, and involves responsibility for making technical decisions on engineering problems and plans. This position interacts regularly with management, subordinates, vendors and residents.

Salary range $87,445.62 to $122,423.87, depending on qualifications. Benefits include health, dental, vision and life insurance, IMRF Pension, vacation, sick, personal and holiday pay. Essential Job Functions Include:

  • Supervises construction and design activities for the Village streets, alleys, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water mains, flood controls and other Public Works related functions dealing with infrastructure;
  • Checks and corrects completed drawings;
  • Drafts and designs projects utilizing CAD (Microstation Intergraph) program;
  • Uses GIS (Geographic Information System) to maintain database of existing village utilities and any improvements to the system;
  • Uses computer for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases;
  • Performs simple level surveys and oversee contract surveyors;
  • Writes specifications and prepares contract documents;
  • Determines engineering estimates of quantities and costs;
  • Determines elevations for streets sewer and water mains;
  • Conducts on-site inspections of construction projects as needed;
  • Ascertains accurate progress estimates are prepared and that project quantity records are maintained;
  • Trains and assists subordinates and peers in technical work;
  • Furnishes information to contractors and property owners and prepares comprehensive reports;
  • Provides technical liaison services and resources to residents and other Village Departments;
  • Actively Participate in Professional Associations;
  • Identify and apply for grant and intergovernmental funding opportunities;
  • Perform QA/QC of coworkers and outside consultant work;
  • Makes competent and timely technical decisions with appropriate level of oversight and elevates technical, safety, operational, administrative, and financial problems when appropriate;
  • Reviews Traffic studies for proposed developments and intersection improvements;
  • Performs permit inspections and acts as technical resource for Community Development.


Qualifications and Conditions:

  • College graduation with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering;
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years professional experience in the field of public works design and construction;
  • Previous management experience preferred, or any equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • A valid Certificate of Registration as a professional Civil Engineer from the State of Illinois required;
  • A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License is required;
  • Hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
