The Village of Oswego (population 35,000) seeks an Assistant Public Works Director – Utilities to oversee the operation and planning of the Villages water and sewer systems, and to assist in the overall success of the Village’s public works.
The Village of Oswego is a growing, forward-thinking community, planning for a vibrant and sustainable future. The Village is currently in the process of transitioning to Lake Michigan Water through the DuPage Water Commission, in collaboration with our neighboring communities. This position will play a major role in planning for the connection, slated to take place in 2027. The Village has invested significant resources in its water system to ensure it meets requirements for receiving Lake Michigan water, however improvements are still needed to maximize the system as it transitions from multiple wells to a single receiving station.
The Assistant Public Works Director-Utilities will oversee the maintenance and planning for the Village’s wells and water treatment, water distribution, and sanitary and storm sewer systems. Responsibilities include system operation and monitoring, ensuring the system remains in compliance with state and federal regulations, researching and preparing annual operating and capital budgets, and supervising utilities staff.
A successful candidate will have experience and understanding in operating a water system, take a creative approach to solving problems, understanding of changing technology and best practices, and a willingness to coach and mentor employees.
Candidates for this position should have an associate degree in chemistry, engineering, math, physics or related field. A bachelor’s degree is preferred. Candidates should have at least five years of water system experience and supervisory experience. An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered. A Class B water operator’s license is required. Collection System Operator Certificate from the IEPA is encouraged.
Candidates should possess excellent customer service and communication skills, financial management skills, and an excellent safety record.
The Village provides a comprehensive and competitive benefit package; salary range is $84,000 to $125,949. Compensation offered will depend on experience and overall qualifications.
