Building Inspector (Community Development)

JOB SUMMARY:
As a Building Inspector (Community Development) at the Village of Schaumburg, not only will you be a part of a thriving community, but you will also be a key player in what makes this community thrive. You will contribute to the enforcement of all building codes and ordinances for new and existing buiildings and structures for both residential and commercial properties, and keep pace with all new and developing technology.
You will be is responsible for the effective enforcement of all building codes and ordinances; evaluates, interprets, and recommends, where appropriate, any necessary changes to the existing codes, to keep pace with all new and developing technology; assists any other department in an emergency that may require services; inspects construction projects and existing structures to assure conformity with adopted Building Code and Ordinances; maintains written records of code or ordinance changes, and coordinates these changes with the Building Supervisor, other appropriate divisions within the department, and other departments.

You will be a vital part of enforcing all applicable adopted building codes and performing required inspections of construction and installation of materials and equipment in new and existing buildings and structures.
As an employee in this department, you will be a part of the team that is responsible for planning and zoning, development review, and building and engineering permit services. The Village is dedicated to promoting the public health, safety, and welfare of the community by ensuring safe building construction, ensuring ongoing compliance with life safety and public health codes, and facilitating long range land use planning.
QUALIFICATIONS:
We are seeking an experienced/dedicated Building Inspector (Community Development).
If you are passionate about code compliance and have:
- Associate’s degree in general studies with course work in building and code enforcement, building inspection technology, general studies, or a related field.
2. A minimum of two years of experience in building construction, comprehensive knowledge of approved methods, materials, practices, and safeguards of building construction, and interpreting building construction prints and drawings.
3. Certified Building Inspection (ICC) certification is required and may be obtained within one year from the date of hire.
4. Possession of a valid driver’s license.
5. Proficiency with current computer technology, job-specific software, and customer service systems.

STARTING PAY RATE: $31.02 – $38.11 per hour based on a 40-hour workweek. Salary dependent on qualifications. The salary range for this position is $31.02 – $45.20. This position is represented by a union; you may refer to the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement available on our website.
