Heavy Equipment Operator (Engineering & Public Works) Streets Division

SALARY:  $36.70 per hour or dependent on contract language based on a 40-hour workweek.  This position is represented by a union; you may refer to the EPW Local 150 collective bargaining agreement available on our website.

JOB SUMMARY:

This position performs work of a skilled nature which requires special training and experience.  Must have knowledge and skills which approach journeyman level in several trades.  Work consists of maintaining and repairing public works facilities such as water and sewer systems, streets, concrete finishing, bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical maintenance; operates a variety of specialty and heavy equipment; assignments are received at the beginning of each new job from supervisor but employees in this class are expected to exercise a great deal of judgment in selecting work methods, equipment, material, and planning; operates all trucks with snow plows and all other equipment which requires special skills; may train other employees; may act as a crew leader.

JOB DUTIES:

  1.  All those listed in Maintenance Worker 2 position.
    2.    Operates and directs the use of division specific equipment for qualified employees.
    3.    Operates a variety of heavy equipment and performs preventative maintenance and makes minor repairs to equipment.
    4.    Trains subordinates in field operations and safe use of specialty and heavy equipment.
    5.    Uses and operates division’s safety equipment such as shoring, SCBA, and personal protective equipment.
    6.    Maintains records, inventory supply lists, and log entries.
    7.    Performs other duties as assigned.

May function as Division Supervisor in their absence.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1.    Education equivalent to a high school diploma.
2.    A minimum of four years of experience in the Public Works Department with knowledge of skilled maintenance and construction work.
3.    A minimum of one year of experience in operating and servicing heavy equipment.
4.    Certification as an Articulated End Loader, Tractor-Loader/Backhoe, and Hydraulic Excavator or ability to obtain within six months from the date of hire.
5.    Certification for all equipment used in the division or ability to obtain within six months from the date of hire.
6.    If working in the Sanitary Sewer division, ability to obtain the National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) certification to practice PACP and MACP required within two years from the date of hire.
7.    Possession of a valid State of Illinois Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
8.    Proficiency with current computer technology, job-specific software, and customer service systems.
