Village of Streamwood, Building Inspector

Responsible For: Inspecting buildings in the course of construction, alteration, and repair to ensure conformance with existing code and ordinance requirements applicable to building construction.  Reviewing building plans for conformance to Village ordinances and technical construction requirements. Conferring with contractors to ensure conformity with regulations and plans; advising the public on matters relating to building regulations; and checking the quality of materials and methods of construction. Recommending stop work orders for work not within approved plans. Testifies in court as necessary.


Residency Requirement:  Must live within the following boundaries within 12 months of hire:

Those portions of the State of Illinois north of I-80 and east of State Route 51 and/or I-39


Starting Salary:  $68,685.  Top of Salary Range: $97,473.

Qualifications: Associate’s degree (A. A.) in a related field from a college or technical school, or equivalent; or ICC Residential Building Inspector Certification; or minimum 10 years’ experience in the building trades as a journeyman, superintendent, foremen, or inspector; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  ICC Residential Building Inspector Certification required within 12 months of employment. Valid Illinois Driver’s License. You must meet these Qualifications in order to be eligible to take the written examination.


Applications: You must complete and submit a Village of Streamwood Employment Application. Applications will be accepted at Village Hall, 301 East Irving Park Road, until 12:00 noon, Wednesday, September 7, 2022.  Your application must be received by this time in order to be eligible to take the Civil Service Examination. Your application must reflect your attainment of the required qualifications.


Civil Service Testing Process

Two Year Eligible List:  The Streamwood Civil Service Commission will be preparing a two year eligible list for the position of Building Inspector.  Only those people appearing on the eligible list can be considered for the Building Inspector position for this two year time period.


Civil Service Written Examination Notification:  The Civil Service Building Inspector written examination will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022.  Applicants will be notified of testing place and time by email and U.S. Mail postcard. A picture ID must be presented to take the exam.
