The Village of Tinley Park (population approx. 56,000) seeks qualified applicants for the full-time position of Code Enforcement Officer in our Community Development Department. This Department is comprised of three divisions: economic development, planning and building. All three divisions work together to strengthen and improve development services to its customers and the quality of life in Tinley Park.
Under the general direction of the Building Official, this position will conduct field investigations of potential violations, gather evidence, and question complainants comparing facts or code requirements, make findings, and issue warnings, correction notices, or citations. Will respond to complaints of potential code violations relating to building occupancy, nuisances, housing conditions, construction, land use, zoning, noise, dumping, clearing, landscaping, signage, and other code-related matters; inspect for compliance and enforce current ICC Codes, International Property Maintenance Codes, Village Zoning Code and Codified Ordinances of the Village of Tinley Park and be required to attend court, testify, and provide written and visual evidence of violations and other required documentation for the Administrative Hearing Clerks as required; and document and maintain records of all code proceedings for all tickets issued.
Additionally, this position performs re-inspections, coordinates work with other Village departments to ensure compliance with codes by residents and businesses, particularly after fires, vehicle impact damage, natural disasters, and other emergency situations and also maintains a variety of logs and reports related to inspection and enforcement activities.
This position requires a High School Diploma or GED Equivalent and three (3) to six (6) years of experience in building inspection, plan review, code enforcement, architecture, or engineering, as related to building construction is required. A combination of education, experience, and training will be considered. A valid driver’s license is required. Must possess an International Code Council Certification (ICC) as an International Property Maintenance Inspector, or the ability to obtain within 12 months, and a valid Driver’s License at the time of application. Excellent verbal and written communication, customer service and interpersonal skills are required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and Excel is necessary.
The ideal candidate will possess an outstanding work ethic, positive attitude, and be self-motivated. They will have the ability to work under time pressures and critical deadlines; maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; maintain confidentiality of information; prioritize work and exhibit discretion, and judgment within established procedures guidelines and rules absent of supervisor; and interpret and enforce applicable Village, State, and Federal codes, ordinances and regulations related to building, zoning, signage, and landscape requirements. Experience effectively communicating the requirements of all related laws, ordinances, codes, and regulations to contractors, tenants, landlords, property owners, and the general public; inspecting houses or other properties and ascertaining compliance with applicable codes utilizing tact; and responding to emergency calls outside of normal business hours as required. Must be able to establish effective working relationships with internal staff and elected officials as well as developers, residents, property owners, contractors, engineers, architects, public officials, and the general public.
Compensation & Benefits: The salary range for this position is $77,198 – $108,078 DOQ plus a generous benefit package including medical, dental, and vision benefits, employer-paid life insurance and other ancillary benefit options. Retirement benefits through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) are provided along with the option to participate in a 457(b) deferred compensation plan. In addition, paid holiday, vacation, personal, and sick days are provided.
