Village of Western Springs, Maintenance Journeyman II

The Village of Western Springs is accepting applications to fill a Maintenance Journeyman MJII (with a focus in mechanics) vacancy in the Municipal Services Department.  We seek an experienced MJII who is looking for a rewarding work environment and a wide range of responsibilities.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, the MJ II is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a municipal fleet consisting of light and heavy-duty automotive vehicles, machinery, and equipment.  Maintains accurate electronic records of all work scheduled and performed while demonstrating and promoting safety.

 

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position will also perform heavy manual work functions related to maintenance, repair, and/or road construction using safe work habits.  The incumbent operates complex equipment and machinery used in development projects and is part of a team that completes a variety of activities to ensure the proper maintenance of Village infrastructure. Additional duties include providing operational support to the Municipal Services department in areas such as but not limited to snow and ice removal; repair water main breaks; perform right-of-way maintenance, maintain sewer infrastructure, forestry, and leaf clean up.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Automotive and Heavy Equipment Maintenance & Repair:  Extensive knowledge of the assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of a wide variety of automobiles, trucks, and other general and special automotive equipment.

Diagnostic and Servicing Techniques:  Skills with diagnosing and servicing gasoline, diesel, hybrid and electric engines and other parts related to fuel, ignition, electrical, cooling, and hydraulic systems.

Preventative Maintenance:  Skills in conducting preventative maintenance on various types of equipment such as heavy trucks, street sweepers, automobiles, light trucks, and other construction equipment.

Equipment Operation:  Skills in operating and maintaining a variety of hand, power, and shop tools and equipment. Ability to operate and repair various types of heavy machinery and equipment including, but not limited to, backhoe, loader, skid steer, and snowplow trucks.

Computers & Recordkeeping:  Skills in using a computer to maintain accurate records of all work scheduled and performed.

Safety Mindset:  Ability to safely perform a variety of tasks in the repair and maintenance of autos and equipment and the ability demonstrate and promote safety.

Municipal Services:  Some knowledge of and ability to perform operational support in the installation, operation and repair of water meters and utility and drainage construction and maintenance techniques. Knowledge of heavy equipment operation, water/sewer distribution repairs and general project coordination.

Flexibility in Scheduling:  Ability to work overtime and accessibility during off-hours for emergencies are essential for this position, particularly during the typical snow plowing season.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and the ability and desire to continue education and training as needed by the position.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within first six (6) months of employment.
  • At least 2 years of experience and/or training (UTI, Lincoln Tech, etc.) in automotive and equipment mechanics.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship or educational program in vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • ASE or related certification.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK CONDITIONS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions including rain, snow, extreme heat and cold, wind, bright sun, and other elements of nature.  Work activity includes frequent lifting of heavy objects of at least 50-70 pounds and the ability to drive and operate light and heavy-duty equipment. The employee works near moving parts and vehicles and is exposed to wet and slippery surfaces.  Employee may have exposure to chemicals, loud noise, and vibration.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

MJII classification receives a rate of $33.94/hour and is eligible for overtime. Medical, dental, life insurance, paid time off, and defined pension through IMRF are included with this position.
