Village of Wilmette, Maintenance Worker

The Village of Wilmette is seeking reliable, self-starter and team orientated individuals to work in the Engineering and Public Works Department. The department currently has a vacancy for Maintenance Worker I in both the Street Division and Water/Sewer Division. In addition, the successful candidate must adhere to any CDC guidelines and Village’s COVID-19 safety measures as part of their employment.

General Responsibilities
This semi-skilled position performs manual work requiring the use of hand tools and light to heavy equipment used in general maintenance and repair activities. This position requires availability for emergency response (overtime) outside of normal working hours, participation in the On-Call Specialist Program, snow plowing operations, water main breaks, and other related tasks as assigned.
The primary responsibilities in the Street division include maintenance and repair work on the streets, alleys, parking lots, sidewalks, street lighting system, traffic signs, parkways, parkway trees and landscape plantings. The duties in the Water/Sewer Division are primarily focused on the operation and maintenance of the water distribution and sewer collection system. Maintenance and repair activities involve water mains, water valves, hydrant or sewer repairs, and water main breaks.

Position Requirements
The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of experience with operating heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Work is often performed under difficult conditions, including extreme weather and confined spaces. The successful candidate must be able to lift to 40 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds on an infrequent basis. Sufficient strength and agility are required to perform manual tasks for prolonged periods. The successful candidate must possess a valid driver’s license. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL, Class B) with air brakes and tanker endorsements is preferred or must be able to obtain a CDL and endorsements within six months of employment.

The successful candidate shall be fully vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine and provide a copy of their COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card to be retained by the Village.

Compensation and Benefits
The 2022 annual salary range is $58,638 to $77,810 with a starting salary DOQ. Selection Process
The successful candidate will undergo a pre-employment physical examination that includes a back evaluation, drug and alcohol screening, audio and vision tests, background investigation, and a driver’s license records check with the Secretary of State’s Office.
