Compensation Ranges Based on Qualifications and Experience:

The annual salary range for this position is as follows:

  • Planner II Range: $84,712 – 112,409
  • Planner III Range: $95,182 – 126,297
  • Planner III-AICP Range: $99,939 – 132,613

The Village of Wilmette is excited to announce an opportunity for a Planner II/III/III-AICP to become a part of a highly professional organization and make a meaningful, positive impact on our community. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Director of Community Development and work closely with the Village Manager’s Office to ensure the continued vibrancy of Wilmette’s business community and build on the history of exceptional planning and zoning practices

The primary responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, managing, and evaluating commercial and mixed-used development projects, the staff liaison to the Village’s Appearance Review Commission and Historic Preservation Commission. This position, depending on qualifications, will have the opportunity to lead several impactful projects such as the implementation of the newly adopted Comprehensive Plan, Historic Preservation Plan and Survey, and contribute to the development of the Housing Plan.

The Village of Wilmette is located along Chicago’s North Shore and is easily accessible from the City of Chicago via the Metra UP North Line and the CTA Purple Line. The Village is 5 square miles with a population of 28,170. The Village has 5 business districts with a vibrant downtown known as the go-to dining destination on the North Shore and two regional shopping centers with Edens Plaza and Plaza del Lago.

General Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing site plans, zoning requests, signage proposals, developmental proposals, and other projects for conformance with codes and the Comprehensive Plan. The Candidate will assist with managing long-range planning projects, providing administrative and technical support to the Historic Preservation Commission, Housing Commission, and serving as the primary support for the Appearance Review Commission and Historic Preservation Commission. Duties will include responding to questions from the public pertaining to permit requirements and zoning, including assisting the permit counter, scheduling inspections, and other responsibilities as assigned.

 

Position Requirements:

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in urban planning, or a related field from an accredited college or university. American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP) certification is preferred but not required (except to qualify for Planner III-AICP position).

The candidate should have experience in an urban planning capacity or a related field of work for a minimum of 2 years of experience to be considered for Planner II, 3+ years of experience for Planner III, or 4+ years and AICP Certification to be considered for Planner III-AICP.

The candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with excellent organizational skills, be detail oriented, possess the ability to handle multiple and simultaneous projects as well as develop positive working relationships with co-workers. The ideal candidate should be able to; interpret zoning codes; be proficient in Microsoft Office products including Outlook, SharePoint, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint; learn the Village’s enterprise software program (Munis); and understand basic concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Experience in working with the public in a customer service role in a fast-paced environment is preferred. In addition, the successful candidate must have knowledge of principles and practices of urban planning and zoning; and be able to learn the departmental rules and regulations, and pertinent codes, ordinances and statutes related to planning and zoning in the Village of Wilmette.

The position and starting salary shall be based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and certifications.
