The Village of Winnetka’s Engineering Department is seeking student applicants for the temporary position of Forestry Intern. This position is expected to begin work in late-May and continue through August (approximately 10 to 12 weeks). The Forestry Intern is responsible for assisting the Village Forester in maintenance and management of the Village’s public and private trees.
Primary Duties:
- Scouting for insect and disease problems (Dutch elm disease, Emerald ash borer, etc.)
- Assess Village trees for needed maintenance, such as removal and pruning.
- Perform tree maintenance duties such as watering and pruning.
- Conduct construction site inspections and identify tree species.
- Maintain Village tree inventory.
- Communicate with the general public on Village and private tree management needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be a full-time college or university student of at least sophomore status pursuing a degree in Forestry, Horticulture or related field.
- Working knowledge of urban forestry principles and practices.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Access and ability to learn other software programs.
- Ability to read, clearly speak, and legibly write the English language.
- Valid driver’s license.
This is a temporary position for the summer months in 2025. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 40 hours weekly. Work may be performed in outdoor conditions and/or near vehicular traffic.
Hourly Rate Range: $20.00 – $25.00
