The Winnetka Fire Department is seeking applicants for the temporary full-time position of Hydrant Intern. Key responsibilities include: examining, maintaining, and flow testing fire hydrants within the Villages of Winnetka and Kenilworth, as well as parts of unincorporated Cook County.
Primary Duties:
- Check hydrants for damage to caps, ports, and threads.
- Flow water from hydrants.
- Read hydrant static, residual, and flow pressures.
- Check that hydrants drain properly.
- Clean and lubricate hydrant threads.
- Change gaskets on hydrant caps when needed.
- Replace and hand-tighten all caps on hydrants.
- Check for obstructions around hydrants.
- Manually log hydrant location and other pertinent information collected while inspecting hydrants.
- Enter all data collected into the Fire Department database.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to read road maps to locate fire hydrants.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in analyzing problems.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, and ability to learn Firehouse software program.
- Ability to read, clearly speak, and legibly write the English language.
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
This is a temporary position for the summer months in 2025 (late-May through August). Typical work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours weekly, Monday through Friday. Work is performed in outdoor weather conditions and in close proximity to vehicular traffic.
Hourly Rate Range: $20.00 – $25.00
