Job Summary:
The Village of Wonder Lake is seeking a skilled and dedicated Wastewater Operator to join our Water Department team. The Wastewater Operator is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the village’s sewer system, ensuring the safe and efficient treatment and disposal of wastewater. This role requires a hands-on individual with a strong understanding of wastewater treatment processes, mechanical systems, and environmental regulations. Duties will be performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Wastewater.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate and Maintain Wastewater Systems:
- Overall operation of wastewater facilities and equipment, daily inspections, sampling, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs
- Perform routine maintenance on sewer lines, lift stations, and related
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair malfunctions related to the system and equipment
- Inspect facilities to confirm proper operation, and at times make changes to the facilities to ensure treatment quality meets compliance with regulations and standards
- Sampling and testing to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations
Record Keeping and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of system operations, run times, flow rates, chemical usage, laboratory results, and maintenance activities
- Assist in compilation and preparation of reports to regulatory agencies as required
Emergency Response:
- Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours emergencies as well as weekend and holiday
- Respond to sewer system emergencies, such as blockages, overflows, and equipment
Safety and Environmental Compliance:
- Work is expected to be conducted in accordance with all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment
- Implement best practices to minimize environmental impact and ensure compliance with wastewater discharge permits.
Community Interaction:
- Interact with the public and provide excellent customer service when addressing sewer- related inquiries or concerns.
- Work closely with other departments and external contractors to coordinate sewer system
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in environmental science, engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in wastewater treatment operations or a related
- Illinois Class 4 Wastewater Operator Certification (or ability to obtain within a specified time frame).
- Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with the maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment equipment.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal wastewater regulations and compliance
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and engineering
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces.
