The Winnetka Police Department seeks a part-time Community Service Officer. The Community Service Officer is a uniformed, civilian position that patrols public streets, alleys, parking lots, and parks to enforce Village ordinances and regulations, and performs administrative support for law enforcement functions not requiring the use of sworn officers. This position enforces state and local parking regulations and animal ordinances, investigates reported animal bites and animal impoundment, directs traffic, and provides courier service for the Department. A significant component of this position is serving as a Crossing Guard to assist school-aged youth in crossing the street at assigned intersections.
Essential Functions:
- Safely cross elementary school students in cross walks and maintain control of pedestrians in crosswalks.
- Chalk tires or use computerized equipment to monitor vehicles parked in permit or time restricted areas; ticket violators.
- Assist Police Officers with traffic control at accident scenes, fires, and special events.
- Assist Records Division.
- Respond to and investigate calls for assistance in dealing with animal-related problems in and around homes and businesses.
- Prepare and maintain animal licensing and violation records and reports.
- Appear as a witness and testify in court when necessary.
- Investigate and complete written reports regarding private property traffic crashes.
- Assist persons who are locked out of their vehicles.
- Provide courier service for the Department.
- Transport police vehicles to and from garage for service and maintenance.
- Report unsafe and unsanitary conditions including potholes, malfunctioning street lights and traffic signals.
- Use verbal and non-verbal signals to keep the attention of pedestrians and drivers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
The part-time Community Service Officer works outdoors in a rotating shift schedule. Shifts are generally 9.5 hours daily, less than 30 hours weekly. May be required to work on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Work occurs in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme heat and cold.
Note: Community Service Officers are eligible for lateral promotion to the rank of Patrol Officer.
Hourly Rate Range: $29.25 — $41.15
