The Opportunity
The City of Mequon is seeking a service-oriented Assistant City Administrator to help lead internal operations and advance strategic initiatives across the organization. This full-time executive leadership role works closely with the City Administrator and oversees key divisions including Human Resources and Information Technology, while also playing a lead role in employee relations, organizational communications, and community engagement.

The ideal candidate is a strong communicator and collaborator who excels at managing people, projects, and policy. A strong candidate is someone who is energized by public service and motivated to make an impact on the organization and the community.

This is an excellent opportunity for a rising public sector leader with aspirations to serve as a City Manager/Administrator, or in another senior leadership position, in the future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct leadership to the Human Resources Division, including budgeting, supervision, recruitment, benefits, training, safety programs, labor relations, and policy development
  • Oversee the Information Technology Division, managing staff, budget, infrastructure planning, cybersecurity, vendor relations, and technology project implementation
  • Lead organization-wide initiatives including recruitment and retention, training and development, and policy implementation
  • Serve as a key advisor to the City Administrator, support high-level projects, and represent the City in public forums and committee meetings
  • Act as Acting City Administrator in the Administrator’s absence, supporting continuity of operations and coordination of emergency response efforts
  • Serve as staff liaison to City Committees, including the Public Welfare Committee, and prepare reports and presentations for elected officials and leadership teams
  • Partner with legal counsel and department heads on labor negotiations, contract administration, grievances, and performance management

What We’re Looking For
The City is looking for a highly motivated and experienced municipal leader who brings a blend of administrative, HR, and operational expertise. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in managing people, building strong internal systems, and navigating complex organizational challenges with professionalism and integrity.

A bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Human Resources Management, Information Technology, or a closely related field is required, along with at least five years of progressively responsible experience in administration or human resources, preferably within the public sector. A master’s degree is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered if it demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for success in the role.

Benefits Available To You
This position has an annual salary of $106,089 – $148,525. Starting rate is dependent upon qualifications. The City offers a competitive benefits packet that includes:

Work Hours
This is a full-time position with regular hours on Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with 1-2 evening meetings per month.
