Village of Downers Grove, System Technician

The Village is accepting applications for a System Technician. The System Technician provides technical support for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of computer systems, network devices, and software applications used throughout the organization. This position plays a key role in ensuring reliable IT services for municipal staff, contributing to the efficient operation of public services.

Major Duties and Functions:

  • Provide desktop and user support for Windows-based systems, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace applications.
  • Respond to service requests and incidents via the helpdesk system; troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues.
  • Install, configure, and maintain PCs, printers, mobile devices, and other peripherals.
  • Perform system imaging, updates, and patch management on workstations and laptops.
  • Assist with user account management in Active Directory and Google Admin Console.
  • Support video conferencing and VoIP systems used by municipal staff.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment inventory and service activity.
  • Collaborate with other IT staff to evaluate, deploy, and support new technologies and projects.
  • Participates in training seminars and reviews technical publications to stay informed about current industry practices and emerging technologies.
  • Ensure adherence to cybersecurity practices and municipal IT policies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Solid understanding of computer hardware, software, and operating system principles, with the ability to apply technical knowledge to practical problems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Windows.
  • Knowledge of basic networking (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Wi-Fi).
  • Analytical skills to evaluate system performance, troubleshoot hardware and software issues, and recommend effective technical solutions.
  • Ability to organize workload, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow through with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to provide effective support and build positive relationships with coworkers, end users, and vendors.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to maintain focus despite frequent interruptions from calls or walk-in requests.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and evolving technologies.
  • Ability to understand and follow both written and verbal instructions accurately and consistently.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field, accompanied by at least two years of experience in desktop support or systems administration; or any combination of education and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Experience in a local government or public sector setting is a plus.

Licenses & Certifications:
Valid Illinois Driver’s License

Salary and Benefits: The full salary range is $74,007 – $101,760, with a maximum starting salary of $88,810, dependent on qualifications. The Village offers an excellent benefits package, including health, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
