The City of Des Plaines Police Department is seeking a dedicated and service-minded Community Service Officer (CSO) to support public safety through non-sworn law enforcement functions. This is more than a support role, it’s an opportunity to directly serve the community, assist in traffic and parking enforcement, respond to non-criminal service calls, and keep essential police operations running smoothly. Responsibilities:
- Support Patrol and Traffic Operations: Assist with traffic control, investigate private property accidents, remove roadway hazards, and enforce parking regulations across the city.
- Engage in Community Response: Respond to calls for service related to abandoned vehicles, stray or injured animals, and illegal dumping. Provide assistance with school crossings and pedestrian safety concerns.
- Maintain Front Desk Operations: Collect and organize report data, respond to walk-ins and calls, process visitor access, and monitor secured areas such as the lock-up facility.
- Assist with Arrest Processing: Support officers with the search, transport, and processing of prisoners, including inventorying personal items, conducting well-being checks, and processing bonds and warrants.
- Handle Administrative Duties: Collect fines and fees, assist with the administrative hearing process, and complete records-related duties as assigned.
- Testify in Court: Serve as a witness as needed in municipal or circuit court cases.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience & Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, basic knowledge of police operations, and the ability to navigate department software systems including MS Office, CAD, LEADS, and ICLEAR.

Valid State of Illinois Class “D” driver’s license with a clean record.
• CPR certification and training in defensive tactics required.
• Must be able to operate a city vehicle equipped with emergency/caution lights.
• No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
Physical & Work Environment:
This role involves both office and fieldwork, including walking, standing, and occasional lifting (up to 20 lbs). Outdoor duties may expose the CSO to varying weather conditions and moderate noise levels.
