The City of Rolling Meadows is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Public Works Director/City Engineer for the City of Rolling Meadows Public Works Department.  Job duties include:

  • Provide management oversight of work performed by professional and consultant staff to insure coordination and compliance with City and other mandated rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; ensure timely preparation and submittal of documents; coordinate activities with other City departments, outside agencies, and organizations.
  • Prepares requests for proposal and contract specifications for design and construction services; participates in the selection of contractors and administers professional service contracts.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of the relevant planning documents, such as the Comprehensive Plan, Strategic Plan, Capital Improvement Plan, and region-wide plans.   Develop recommendations to amend the plans as needed to promote the rational and orderly development of the City.
  • Perform the most complex and difficult work of staff responsible for providing engineering services to the City; review and check complex engineering designs, computations, plans, and studies; analyze unusual situations and resolve them through application of engineering principles and practices.
  • Provide technical assistance and information to other City departments and a variety of boards and committees; attend committee meetings as required.
  • Assist the Director in the assembly of Department’s annual operating and capital budget documents and monitoring of departmental expenditures by operating divisions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a high school degree, with college or junior college undergraduate degree in civil engineering, or similar is required.  A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Certificate as a Professional Engineer issued by the State of Illinois.
  • Over five (5) years progressively responsible experience in a municipal public works, or civil engineering department, with an understanding of the various programs relating to general public works responsibilities, including streets, water, sewer, refuse, building and grounds, vehicle maintenance, and related disciplines, with at least five (5) years of experience in supervision.
  • Strong skills related to; communication, organization, management, and budget development and control.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to work and interact openly and effectively with all.
  • Possession of a valid Class D (or higher) State of Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Possession of NIMS Compliancy certifications, or consistent pursuit of certifications in these classes or future classes yet to be defined.

The City offers a competitive pay and benefits package including vacation and sick leave, along with health insurance and IMRF pension.

The salary range for the Assistant Public Works Director/City Engineer is $126,695.86 to $158,620.00, with a starting salary DOQ.
