What Does the Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Do?
Under general supervision of the Deputy Director of Community Development/Building Commissioner, performs professional level plan review, inspections and code enforcement for the Village which may include: field inspections and technical work in connection with the enforcement of Village Ordinances and adopted model building codes (ICC/International Code Council building and property maintenance related codes), work related to licensing, planning, zoning, permitting, limited plan reviews as required and enforcement of municipal ordinances. Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include weekends and evenings as needed.

Generally or as Necessary

  • As back-up to the Building Commissioner, responds 24/7 to emergency or on-call requests from the Police or Fire Departments, such as for property damage or structural fires on an as needed basis.
    • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated.

Building Inspector Specific

  • Inspects various types of structures, including commercial and residential buildings, during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with plans, applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Inspects existing buildings and premises for business license, change of use, and occupancy for compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Examines permit plans and specifications (aka performs reviews) for proposed various structures or buildings proposed to be constructed, altered, repaired, moved or demolished to ensure compliance with the provisions of applicable codes, ordinances and regulations; recommends modifications and adjustments as necessary.

Code Enforcement Specific

  • Performs daily patrols and inspections for violations, responds to complaints of code violations, documents violations, drafts a variety of correspondence, and issues notices to comply on violations.
  • Maintains documentary evidence on cases of non-compliance for use in local adjudication (or court) and represents the Village as prosecutor for assigned local adjudication cases. When necessary, appears in court and testifies professionally and impartially.

Are You Qualified?
Education

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required. College and/or business coursework is preferred.
  • ICC certifications for Commercial Building Inspector, Residential Building Inspector, and/or Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector preferred.
  • Requires possession of Residential Building Inspector and Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certifications or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working with all phases of modern construction practices and building codes, plus three (3) years in code enforcement, planning, and/or plan review preferred.
  • Requires thorough knowledge and or experience with Village ordinances, adopted model building codes, zoning codes, and other pertinent laws or regulations.
  • Requires knowledge of construction practices, state and local building codes and ordinances.
  • Requires excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to prepare, organize and communicate field data reports.

What Will You Get Paid?
This is a full time, non-exempt (hourly) position with a starting wage of $29.96 -$39.32/hr (DOQ).
